What Is It?

The PupFitters K-9 Leashes are designed specifically for police, military and search & rescue dogs. There are two different models of the K-9 Unit leash, one designed for attack dogs and the other for patrol dogs. Both models are built for heavy usage under extreme conditions.

Design Background & Philosophy

I have always stood in awe of K-9 Unit and other working dogs. The bravery, loyalty, intelligence and sheer physical prowess exhibited by these dogs makes me ashamed to be a mere human being. Over the years my wife and I have befriended many working dogs and their handlers. A few of the handlers asked me to make special leashes for their faithful companions, a request I could not refuse. I knew that the K-9 units were pretty hard on their gear, so the leashes had to be built for extreme duty. In addition these dogs deserve the most comfortable and capable equipment available. In short the working dog leashes had to be the best of the best.

Product Description

The K-9 Unit leashes are made from an ultra-strong 5/8” multi-filament polypropylene blend rope. The rope is made to withstand a sustained working load of 500 lbs. The rope is water resistant and will not rot or mildew. The material is also resistant to damage from Ultraviolet exposure. The rope weave is soft to the touch and has just a little bit of stretch or “give” for comfort.

The K-9 Unit is available with two different types of attachment hardware. The attack dog version of the leash utilizes a quick release or “panic” snap. This allows the handler to release the dog with one hand even with the leash under tension. K-9 Unit police officers covet this feature because they can turn the dog loose while handling a radio, sidearm, etc. The patrol dog version utilizes a heavy duty, high security bull snap. The bull snap utilizes a reverse opening mechanism that the user pulls open in order to release the dog. The chances of accidental release are very remote.

The loops forming the handle and snap hook attachment points are secured using aircraft grade nylon webbing. The webbing is sewn with aircraft grade thread and double stitched using industrial sewing machines. The handle is large enough to use while wearing duty gloves. The handle attachment webbing forms a secure hand grip that provides extra leverage for dogs that tend to pull while on leash.

To make the leash comfortable we use a very soft, pliable weave. As the bare rope is susceptible to burrs and underbrush PupFitters snap leashes come “up armored” with a nylon lead wrap. The lead wrap is a 1000 denier high-strength Cordura nylon cover that protects the lead from snags and abrasion damage. The lead wrap is secured to the leash with a continuous length of industrial Velcro. The PupFitters leash can be used with the wrap in place for protection in the woods or uncovered to reduce weight and bulk. The leash wrap can be installed and removed in moments and is machine washable.

In addition every PupFitters Utility Leash is equipped with a solid brass “D” ring sewn securely into the rope near the handle. This provides an attachment point for a variety of items such as keys, waste bags, flashlights, pepper spray, etc.

Compromises & Limitations

In an ideal world everything that we own would perform beautifully in all circumstances, require no maintenance, last forever and cost next to nothing. Of course our world is not exactly perfect. Compromises are a fundamental part of design and engineering. The PupFitters Utility Leash has its own design compromises and limitations.

Once again safety is our highest priority. To make the PupFitters Utility Leash strong and reliable we used premium quality materials. In addition, each leash is individually crafted in the United States by highly experienced industrial assemblers. Maintaining this high level of quality is expensive. So the PupFitters Utility Leashes cost considerably more than those available from other dealers and pet stores. Quite simply we chose quality over cost considerations.
